AdWords is a pay per click advertising system that you can use to place your ads on both google.com and many websites in their AdSense advertisers network. Basically you create a small text ad using their tools and then bid on a series of keywords that will trigger your ad to be displayed.
Where will my ads be displayed?
Your ads will be shown in the search engine results for google.com. If you go to google.com and run a search, you can see the AdWord ads along the right column where it says ‘sponsored links’. In addition, you can select to have your across their AdSense advertisers network.
How much does it cost?
The bidding for keywords starts at 5 cents per click. It goes up from there depending on the keyword you are bidding on. Some of the most competitive keywords can cost up 30 dollars! In general, when compared to other engines it seems that bids for keywords in AdWords are generally higher. This difference seems to be insignificant because in my own experience, the traffic you get from AdWords tends to convert better than other networks.
Reporting:
AdWords offers a variety of reporting tools to help you manage your campaigns. In addition, they offer many tools to help you see how your campaigns are doing. One of the most useful of these tools is the conversion tracking system that helps you see exactly how many of your clicks are converting to actual sales or leads.
The Down Side:
-- Inflated Prices --
AdWords is probably the biggest PPC system out there. Because of this, a ton of people use it which often inflates the bids on keywords, especially very obvious and popular ones.
